Description Plant Care
Schizachyrium scoparium 'Blue Heaven' (Little Bluestem Grass). Schizachyrium scoparium Blue Heaven is a brand new native ornamental grass discovered at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minnesota by Dr. Mary Myers. This grass offers a landscape an excellent vertical element with its columnar growth habit. This variety of Schizachyrium tends to stay more upright all season long even when weighed down by seed heads. The foliage melts from color to color starting as blue-grey then changing to burgundy then to a purple-violet and finally will become red for the autumn. In the middle of summer white feathery seed heads will emerge creating a wispy appearance. This plant is also noteworthy for its heat and drought tolerance. Keep mulch away from the base of the plant. Use as a single specimen or hedge in the landscape.
