Description Plant Care
Phlox subulata 'Crimson Beauty' (Moss Phlox). Going unnoticed most of the year, because it blends in with grass and other planting in the garden, until flowers emerge in late winter and spring. Crimson, star shaped flowers cover the plant. One of the signals that spring has arrived! Growing no more than 6" tall and forming thick clumps, it is an excellent ground cover. Suitable for rock gardens and cascading and stabilizing a slope as well. Flowers and foliage will cascade down the side of a container, making a nice compliment to a vertical accent. Locate in full sun for best growth, but will tolerate part shade. Although not fussy about soil conditions, it does prefer it drains well. The plant does benefit from fertilization, and supplemental watering during very dry weather. Cut the foliage back after flowering to encourage denser growth, and perhaps a second flush of blooms.
