Description Plant Care
Muhlenbergia capillaris 'Muhly Grass' (Muhly Grass, pink hair grass). Typically found in sandy coastal areas, in woodlands, or in rocky soils. It is native to the eastern United States and Mexico. M. capillaris is a gardener's favorite amongst ornamental grasses. It has fine, dark green foliage that appears somewhat glossy. It is the seed heads, however, that make this grass so special. It blooms from summer to early fall, with a showy display of delicate pink seed panicles, that hold well through early fall. Its pink inflorescence seems to float above the plant like soft clouds. Most attractive in grouped plantings and sweeps. It is very drought tolerant (but can also tolerate wet feet for short periods) and performs best in full sun or light shade. Attracts birds and butterflies!
Special Characteristics:
  • Salt Tolerant
  • North American Native
  • Xeriscape
  • Deer Resistant

What is a Liner Tray?

Our liner trays are a 10" x 20" tray with multiple plant cells that vary in depth depending on the cell size.

In general, 'Liner' is a term used to describe a smaller starter plant that will usually be re-potted into a larger container for finishing. In some applications, they may be used for massed planting when cost becomes a bigger factor.
Our liners are targeted for the horticultural industry. They are most suitable for greenhouse growers, nurseries, farmer's markets, and landscapers. They are also suitable for potting up pre-season and finishing into a larger plant prior to planting in the landscape.

Liners planted directly into the landscape would require additional care due to the smaller root size. We do NOT guarantee the success of direct planting into the landscape using liner trays. There are times, however, when planting en masse, that liners may be a viable cost alternative due to the number of plants required. In this case, some losses might be acceptable for the planting volume.

Note: If installing massed plantings, see our space calculator to figure out how many plants might be needed.

Our liner sizes range from 21 cells to 72 cells per tray. The larger 21 cells are more suitable for direct landscape planting, while the other cell sizes would need to be grown on and finished in a larger container prior to planting.

The cell sizes are as follows:
72 cell = 2 1/4" deep
50 cell = 2 1/4" deep
38 cell = 3" deep
21 cell = 3 3/4" deep
