Description Plant Care
Lobelia cardinalis 'Cardinal Flower' (Cardinal Flower, Scarlet Lobelia). One of the most strikingly beautiful wildflowers of the United States! Brilliant red flower spikes on long stamens. Plants usually found in groupings in low, very wet woods in the wild. Grows to about 2' tall by August when it shoots up to 3-4' and begins to bloom. The bright red flowers are very attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies! Leaves are attractive, dark green and glossy. Easily grown in rich, humusy, medium wet to wet soils in full sun to part shade. Needs constant moisture and excellent drainage. Will tolerate full sun in cool, northern climates, but otherwise appreciates part shade. Divide clumps in spring as needed. May self-seed in optimum growing conditions.
Special Characteristics:
  • Water Tolerant
  • North American Native
