Description Plant Care
Baptisia australis 'Blue False Indigo' (Blue False Indigo). 2010 PPA Perennial Plant of the Year! Baptisia may not be one of the fastest perennials to reach mature size, but it is unquestionably one of the loveliest, and often commands a premium price. Indigo blue, or violet blooms atop flower spikes. Easily grown in average, dry to medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun to light shade. Tolerates drought and poor soils, but prefer a rich, moist well drained garden soil. There are no serious insect or disease problems. Over time, plants develop slowly expanding clumps with deep and extensive root systems, and should not be disturbed once established. Plants take on more of a shrubby appearance and tend to open up after bloom. Trimming or shearing foliage after bloom helps maintain rounded plant appearance, but eliminates the developing seed pods which are so attractive. Taller plants may need support, particularly when grown in part shade locations. Suitable for borders, cottage gardens, prairies, meadows and native plant gardens. Natural range is from South-central to Eastern United States.
Special Characteristics:
  • Salt Tolerant
  • Deer Resistant
  • North American Native
  • Perennial Plant of the Year
