Description Cultural Notes Plant Care
Astilbe 'Fanal' (False Spirea, meadowsweet, Plumeflower). A very popular red variety. Dark, bronze-green foliage and fragrant, carmine-red flowers. One of the earliest reds to bloom. Shade or semi shade for best floral color, and in groups for maximum impact. They increase rapidly each year. Good in containers and excellent cut flower. Prefers average to rich, well-drained soil in partial to full shade. Elegant when massed in a moist shady spot. In order to keep Astilbe looking good for the next year, do not cut it back in the winter, (the old foliage helps protect the plant from winter damage), but prune in early spring. Astilbe can be used as cut flowers, perennial borders or shade gardens with Hostas and Ferns. Astilbe is considered to be deer resistant and will attract hummingbirds.
