Ajuga reptans 'Mahogany' (Bugleweed, Carpet Bugle, Carpet Bugleweed, Bugle Weed). Lush, almost black-burgundy, glossy leafed foliage. Excellent groundcover for moist, semi-shaded areas. Blooms are stunning, bright blue flowers on 3 inch spikes in late spring through early summer. Does best in fertile, well-drained soil. Situated in morning sun with afternoon shade, or in filtered light; allows ajuga to really look its best. Excellent used for borders and in mixed containers, as well as in areas where grass is shade-challenged. Fast grower. Space 12" apart when used as a groundcover.
Ajuga tolerates a wide range of soil conditions as long as soil is well drained.
It may be grown in any type of light from morning sun to full shade. The leaves will tend to be smaller when grown in full sun, but the plant will produce more flower spikes.
Ajuga prefers moist soil, but will tolerate drought remarkably well.
Established plants should be set or transplanted in the garden in early spring.
The crown should never be covered with soil or the plant will rot and die.
Average water needs; water regularly; do not overwater
