Athens Select Plant A popular plant in Victorian times that is fast becoming a favorite again. This plant is a must for any garden with moderate sun. Easily grown and insect resistant, it provides great color throughtout the growing season. The marbled rich purple leaves have irridescent blue markings, with a deep wine-red underside. A real attention grabber that looks good with almost any other plant, but particualrly with plants with lime-green or variegated foliage. Prefers more shade than sun, but will take some morning sun. Requires well drained, enriched garden soil. Pinch back if it gets too 'leggy'. Seems as though deer and rabbits don't favor it. If left alone, it can get to be 3 or more feet tall; best to prune it early creating more branches, and hence more leaves and a more compact plant. Overwinter indoors in zones colder than Z9.
