In 2009 Giant Feather Grass received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. A native to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, it has been considered one of the largest feather grasses. If you want to add drama to a landscape this is the ornamental grass for you. Stipa gigantea is considered a clumping grass, a moderate grower, and semi-evergreen. The narrow foliage is blue-green and cascades as if a waterfall. In the early summer stalks that resemble bamboo will rise above the foliage and large panicles of purple oat-like flowers will emerge. Then as the flowers mature they will become a glorious gold that will shimmer in the sun. This amazing show will last for some time as the golden color will persist well into the early months of winter. This grass is drought tolerant once established and deer resistant. It is excellent for dried flower arrangements. Use in the landscape as a focal point to add some exceptional architecture to your garden.
