This sedum first appeared in Germany in Ewald Hugin's garden. It is a cross between Sedum 'Atropurpureum' x S. 'Autumn Joy'. The word 'matrone' in German means a lady of well rounded form. What a perfect name for this robust succulent! Sedum 'Matrona' dies back down to the ground every year. In the spring, you will notice what looks like little cabbages around the base of the plant, as the rosettes get ready to spring into growth. Succulent, gray-green leaves with rosy edges on dark burgundy stems. The flowers start out as a light green, coloring to a rosy pink and by fall turning a bronzy color. Leave the flowers intact through winter to add winter interest. This cultivar is a good forage plant for bees and butterflies.
Indoors or in greenhouse, grow tender species in a mix of 3 parts soil-based potting mix, 2 parts grit, and 1 part leaf mold, in full light, with good ventilation.
In the growing season, water moderately and apply a half-strength, balanced liquid fertilizer every month.
Water sparingly in winter.
Outdoors, grow in moderately fertile, well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil in full sun.
