Description Plant Care
Schizachyrium scoparium 'Little Bluestem' (Little Bluestem, beardgrass). A flashback to the American tallgrass prairie! It is a warm season, clump forming, fine textured grass with steely blue-green to silver foliage. As late summer arrives, the bronze-orange flower plumes shoot up, and the entire plant begins to take on colors of pink and russet tones, August to December. An ideal grass for managed meadows, it is tolerant of varying moisture conditions. Prefers full sun; well drained soil; excessive moisture and fertile soil will cause the tall flower stems to fall over. Keep mulch away from the base of the plant. Considered drought tolerant once established. Will tolerate part shade. Attracts birds and butterflies (larval food).
