It seems the gardening public has finally discovered the most beautiful banana in the world, the Red Abyssinian. This banana is not the least bit cold-hardy, but who cares when it grows like a rocket and makes a landscape statement from spring until the first frost in the fall! The Red Abyssinian is known botanically as Ensete ventricosum Maurelii.

 

After the red banana has been growing for several years, its energy is now concentrating toward the flower production. The fruit look like small 1 inch long undeveloped bananas. They contain a number of small black seeds.

 

Red Abyssinian is a very impressive banana looking plant, that grows really fast provided it gets enough water and fertilizer. The Ensete can be readily distinguished from the fruiting bananas by the much stronger midrib.
