Pennisetum alopecuroides Hameln
'Hameln' is the oldest cultivar of Pennisetum alopecuroides. Use it wherever the straight species, and other ornamental grasses, would be too tall or large. A slightly smaller form of 'alopecuroides'. The foliage green and fine textured. Seed heads appear July through September, open greenish-white, and turn a creamy tan. Blooms earlier than the species, making it a better choice for gardens with a short growing season.
Prefers well-drained soil in full sun to light shade. Considered deer resistant and drought tolerant once established. One of the best dwarf fountain grasses for mass plantings, planted in groups, or or as a specimen in borders, and grown in containers. Will tolerate wind and salt spray.
