Panicum virgatum
A North American native, warm season bunchgrass with short rhizomes forming a tall, cascading mound with hanging, luxuriant foliage topped by large, delicate, open panicles. Foliage color ranges from silver-blue to intense green in summer, sandy to intensely cinnamon in winter. Seed heads range from deep green to purple, and even red.
Excellent screen or specimen plant. Requires full sun, regular watering. However, is drought tolerant, and tolerates heavy wet sites near water, making it ideal for erosion control. Very versatile!
Provides winter interest in the garden and is a perfect winter cover and food source for wildlife. Useful in borders, low screen, tolerates wind and salt spray, native areas, as dried flowers; best in groups of at least 3.
