Typically found in sandy coastal areas, in woodlands, or in rocky soils. It is native to the eastern United States and Mexico. M. capillaris is one of the most highly ornamental grasses. It has fine, dark green foliage that appears somewhat glossy. It is the seed heads, however, that make this grass so special. It blooms from summer to early fall, with a showy display of delicate pink seed panicles, that hold well through early fall. Its pink inflorescense seems to float above the plant like soft clouds. Most attractive in grouped plantings and sweeps. It is very drought tolerant and performs best in full sun or light shade. Attracts birds and butterflies!
