Mophead Pia is the most dwarf variety out of all the Hydrangea macrophyllas ranging from 3 to 4 feet making this a great selection for small space gardens.  Another great feature is its ability to flower at a younger age than other Hydrangeas.  The pink flowers are the traditional corymb also called Mophead form measuring 6 inches across.  As the flowers ages the pink will intensify resulting in a deeper pink color.  Acidic soils will cause the flowers to turn purple in color. Add lime If you want to keep your flowers pink.  Hydrangea macrophyllas require selective pruning to enhance flowering for the next year.  This is done by pruning down to the base the “old wood” to help encourage the new buds that will appear swollen to grow.  In the south this plant needs to be sheltered from afternoon sun.  Mophead Pia is excellent for cut flower arrangements as well as dried flower arrangements.  Use as a single specimen, hedge, or in groups.
