Lacecap Mariesii Variegata not only has beautiful flowers, but also has attractive foliage.  This hydrangea has a different style of bloom than the traditional corymb or known as mophead.  This one has what is called a Lacecap bloom where the center florets are sterile and therefore do not open.  Then there is a single outer layer of florets that are fertile and do in fact open.  For this variety the center bead-like florets are a gentian blue and the outer open florets are white tinged with blue.  In total the blooms are 4 inches across.  The foliage is variegated with a bright green center and edges streaked with white.  Lacecap Marieseii Variegata will truly stop you in your tracks because it has so much to look at!  Hydrangea macrophylla’s require selective pruning to enhance flowering for the next year.  This is done by pruning down to the base the “old wood” to help encourage the new buds that will appear swollen to grow.  In the south this plant needs to be sheltered from afternoon sun.  This plant is excellent for cut flower arrangements as well as dried flower arrangements.  Use as a single specimen, hedge, or in groups.
