Fifty years ago Mophead Glowing Embers was created and still delights us today with its beauty.  Its name reflects its changing flower colors and appears as coals slowly burning.  The 8 inch across blooms begin as small clusters of light green then as each individual floret opens it will turn deeper pink.  Due to the florets growing at different rates, the entire corymb appears multi-colored.  The foliage is dark green with toothed serrated edges.  Hydrangea macrophylla’s require selective pruning to enhance flowering for the next year.  This is done by pruning down to the base the “old wood” to help encourage the new buds that will appear swollen to grow.  In the south this plant needs to be sheltered from afternoon sun.  Glowing Embers is excellent for cut flower arrangements as well as dried flower arrangements.  Use as a single specimen, hedge, or in groups.
