Leatherleaf Sedge, Buchanan's Sedge
One of the best known of the New Zealand sedges, grown for its narrow-leaved, dense, erect tussocks of russet-red or a copper-bronze color. Plants exhibit a strong, vertical form when young, then arch downward with age and possess distinctly curled leaf tips and inconspicuous flowers. Provide a growing area in full sun or partial shade, with moist, well draining soil. Grows in full sun along the coast, but requires some shade inland. A tolerance for wet soil allows the plant to be used near water. Newly planted clumps may be slow to establish.
Grow in fertile, moist soil. Most can take soggy soils. Keep deciduous species dryish in winter.
