A vigorous, fast growing, compact and upright shrub which adds structure to the perennial border. Spikes of fragrant, rich, wine-red flowers, 6-12" long, bloom at the end of arching canes. Very floriferous! Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Gray-green foliage contrasts well with flowers. Plant in full sun, spacing plants 36-48" apart in average, well-drained garden soil. Prune hard before new growth begins in the spring. Remove spent flowers to promote new bloom. Considered drought tolerant and deer resistant once established.
Mulch butterfly bushes in the fall, then prune the plants back to the ground in late winter.
Buddleia will re-emerge from its roots in spring.
Blooms tend to be larger and more prolific on butterfly bush's new growth, giving you incentive for pruning it.
