Athyrium nipponicum Pictum
Perennial Plant of the Year Winner 2004
The delicate fronds of Japanese Painted Fern are silver with green highlights and subtle burgundy veination. Constantly admired in the gardens, this fern lightens up dark, shady areas and makes a pleasing textural trio with Hostas and Carex. Plant a dark leaved Heuchera nearby to echo the burgundy in the fronds. Requires a rich, moist soil in part to full shade. Spreads by rhizomes. Considered deer and rabbit resistant.
